Sergio Leone Marathon
« on: July 11, 2009, 04:32:44 PM »

ses593 and me have decided to jumpstart this one (we're still hoping to watch those other 2 Nicholas Ray films soon) so that we can watch these in time for the Filmspotters Top 100 list. So it's happening. Now.

Lineup and dates:

A Fistful of Dollars  - by 16th July
For a Few Dollars More- by 21st July
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - by 27th July
Once Upon a Time in the West - by 1st Aug
Once Upon a Time in America - by 7th Aug
Duck, You Sucker - by 12th Aug

Other people should join us and stuff.

I haven't seen a single one :)! Just wish one of these was playing on the big screen around here though.. doesn't look like it unfortunately.

Ah... I have all 5 of these films on DVD.  Special Editions though with The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly, I got a used Collector's Edition.

The only film of Leone's I need to see but watch it on DVD is Duck, You Sucker!

Excellent idea! I'm eagerly anticipating your rave reviews of Once upon a Time in the West.

I think I will only join you for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, because I can only stomach Westerns in quite small doses (and I watched Treasure of the Sierra Madre yesterday).

I think "Duck, You Sucker!" is better than "A Fistful Of Dollars", and just as good as "For A Few Dollars More". It's also Leone's most overtly political film (Though to my mind, almost all of his films had political subtext) and his most comedic (even though it has moments of tragedy that seem like a dry run for "Once Upon A Time In America"). I think you should consider adding it, worm.

I wouldn't mind adding Duck! You Sucker (aka A Fistful of Dynamite).  I haven't seen it (we could tack it on the end, say August 12th?).  I actually have seen all everything but Once Upon a Time in America, but it has been a long time since I have seen the others.  I think I bought a couple of them on DVD a while back and never even watched them, so I am looking forward to this marathon.

I'd say to give Duck, You Sucker a shot, but I found it to be a step back for Leone as a director, a film where all the progression he showed up till Once Upon A Time In The West was lost.

Great lineup. Have fun.
-Le Chiffre: You changed your shirt, Mr Bond. I hope our little game isn't causing you to perspire.

-James Bond: A little. But I won't consider myself to be in trouble until I start weeping blood.

I'm so joining in! I was thinking of watching Magnolia tonight, but I'm going to watch Once Upon a Time in the West instead.

I've seen Once upon a Time in the West/America one time each. The others at least 4 or 5 times a piece.
