My thoughts on CASABLANCA:

Although it lacks technical genius it shows that editing and cinematography is really not important when a movie is well-acted and well-written. I have never seen a movie which is so full of interesting characters and the plot stands out as it does NOT go the way the usual romantic movie does. It shows very flawed (Ilsa, Renault) and very noble characters (Rick, Victor) and avoids the stereotypes of that genre. I also think it's a fast paced movie with no redundant scenes at all.
About its reputation: I think it always makes it hard for a movie to please you when you have read how awesome it is... that builds up highest expectations on the viewer. My love for the film only developed on several viewings. I think those are the movies that really stand out: when you appreciate them more with each viewing.
