James Stewart. Cary Grant and Bogart a close second.

These three were my top choices as well. I went with Stewart.

Cary Grant made mostly comedies, but adding to that his performances in Charade, North by Northwest and Suspicion and he gets my vote.  In all of these films he was undeniably Cary Grant, but he came at the persona from new angles and found new ways to entertain us.

I'm going with Grant, with the major caveat that I really like Stewart but haven't seen several of his bigger roles.

Cary Grant.

Fonda and Stanwyck are out of their league here, legend-wise.

Interesting.  25 responses in 12 hours and Bogart, Grant and Stewart are all very close.

Yeah I think Liz Taylor or Ingrid Bergman would make more sense than Stanwyck, not that that would change the poll results much.

I think Fonda and Stanwyck are certainly in the same league as the others, legends-wise, to the older generations.  Bergman has Casablanca a film with images (and lines of dialogue) that the younger generations of casual moviegoers know more of without having seen the film than the Fondas and Stanwycks.
