Bogie (thou i'd have voted for Monroe has she been on the list - biggest pop icon of the 20th? I'd say yes.)

James Stewart.

I believe he has more movies I love than any of the others.

Definitely, I don't think anyone comes close to her in the pop icon department. She might be my pick as well, she has an electric quality where I don't think i've disliked any of her performances.

But of the choices above, who is the one with the performances you love to watch and movies you want to own?

I originally went Bogie, just for the legend, but after seeing that it's more about performances, I went with Stewart.

I thought the acting question might come up and I couldn't think of the right way to phrase it.
With many of these icons, especially Bogart and Wayne, they played a particular type of character over and over again.

What I think is brilliant about those stars is that within that persona they would surprise us, not with 180 degree departures, but by revealing tough/tender layers.  You think you know Bogart and then you get Lonely Are The Brave or the extreme nuttiness of Sierra Madre.

And John Wayne was very reliable as The Duke, but work like The Searchers, True Grit and The Shootist gave these characters new wrinkles and deeper layers.

You don't have to change your looks, walk and talk to prove you're a better actor.  Cary Grant made mostly comedies, but adding to that his performances in Charade, North by Northwest and Suspicion and he gets my vote.  In all of these films he was undeniably Cary Grant, but he came at the persona from new angles and found new ways to entertain us.

I think Stewart's the best example of that, with his All-American Everyman roles (Mr. Smith, Shop Around The Corner, Philadelphia Story) twisting into neurosis after the war in his Hitchcock films and It's A Wonderful Life, and moving into full-fledged paranoid obsession in his Anthony Mann westerns.

James Stewart. Cary Grant and Bogart a close second.
