I love Kevin Smith's films (not all of them though) but will never apologize. I think they are genuinely good, and all display a great and interesting writing voice. I also think Jersey Girl is pretty great and unfairly hated.

no, its very fairly hated and it has nothing to do with Bennifer - its a smarmy, crap script and one of the most annoying things i've ever seen.

I really don't get this at all. What I saw was a funny and touching story about a father and his daughter. What movie were you watching. And I do thing that the hate is mostly for Bennifer, considering most people who I've seen bashing the film haven't even seen it.

Smith goes to that place of mawkish sentimentality way too often, usually though he gan fit in pop-culture based crack dialogue or a 3rd character to break up the sap with comedy, even staging it between two people who realize the absurdity of the situation.  But setting the situation between a father and daughter in JG doesn't allow this and thus just turns overwhelmingly nauseating.  I don;t know anyone who bashes JG without ever seeing it - its Smith after all, Gigli is the one that gets the unseen Bennifer treatment.

Most people haven't seen any of Smith's films, let alone Jersey Girl.

except people who actually tend to talk about Smith - they've usually seen most of them.

Hitchcock is one of my faves but that doesn't make Notorious a watchable film.

What the hell?  Notorious is a masterpiece.

Jersey Girl was... ok.  I could appreciate where he was going even if I didn't think he had the depth to get there as a filmmaker.

Clerks 2 and Zack and Miri though are unforgivable shitburgers.

i really like Clerks 2. in fact I think its the best movie Smith has done

I don't have to defend my favorite directors because they are too awesome to need defending.

No, it's really not. It's one of Hitchcock's worst efforts, leads who have no chemistry, a love story where the dude treats the woman like crap and for some reason the camera and the script continually justify his actions, as does the woman in the end. It's not a bad movie, and should have sad unwatchable at times instead of completely unwatchable, but it's a thoroughly mediocre film that borders on being outright bad.

So, does it count as defending if you genuinely feel all the films are good but the general public disagrees with you?

Yes. In a nutshell, that is what the poll question is about.
-Le Chiffre: You changed your shirt, Mr Bond. I hope our little game isn't causing you to perspire.

-James Bond: A little. But I won't consider myself to be in trouble until I start weeping blood.

Ok, so it has nothing to do with you yourself admitting fault in the films but apologizing for said faults as a defense?
