So why only 11?  I love that you included a Satyajit Ray, and such an unusual one.

I originally set out with restricting myself to just ten titles out of curiosity as to what such a list would look like.  Mostly inspired by reading the comments by the Sight and Sound voters.  Found myself putting Army of Shadows in at the ten slot because I felt bad leaving it out, but then doing so wasn't my true ranking.  I allowed myself a plus-one to make me feel better.  Distant Thunder is the Ray that I can't shake.

Cheers.

Yes, MT, I loooooooooove my Disney. And I stand by my opinion that A Goofy Movie, while produced by one of their B studios, is the best non-Pixar Disney film of the nineties. I have amused myself by thinking of writing a full analysis on it for the forums, but I have yet to feel up for it. Someday soon though.  ;D

I would recommend you giving Sleeping Beauty another watch in the next year or so. I watched it again just recently and was astounded by just how striking the visual style is in that movie. After all of these years, it truly holds up. I could care less about the story. Out of all of the Disney films, Sleeping Beauty is the one that I am clamoring for on Blu Ray. Perhaps when I start working again.  :D

ETA: Pauline at the Beach is a true delight! It cemented my love for Rohmer.

P.S.

On the Criterion for Black Narcissus it was revealed to me in one of the special features that Powell & Pressburger had an intense passion for Disney films. They thought that he was producing film in its purest form. Giving Disney's films a second look, I can't disagree. Powell & Pressburger said that they aimed to imitate Disney with their use of color in their films. It all makes perfect sense.

A Goofy Movie was on the Top 97 last year. Not really sure why it fell off. Aside from Herc and TLK it's the best of the 90's as far as Disney is concerned.

That's as rock n roll a list of movies as you could gather Sean (d'ya see what I did there?).

Lurve some of the lower entries (The Innocents!!) as well. I feel that no. 100 spot is quite telling, the film that squeezes on there that you can't bear to leave off. For it to be the gonzo Kiss Me Deadly, says something, dunno what!

Hah, yes - I'm trying to work out what it says too. I still think about the ending of Kiss Me Deadly before I fall asleep sometimes and it still chills me. It's influence is pretty far-reaching too - aside from the obvious ones (Pulp Fiction, Raiders of the Lost Ark) I can't be the only one who had it at the forefront of their mind during the beach scene in Drive.

Nice strong sci-fi presence on that list.

You seem like a fella who treasures thrills & chills most of all.

:)) So high on your list!

I didn't really expect my list to be so sci-fi / horror stacked but my heart beats genre so it's not so surprising for me!

@SeanGather: over a third is on my list as well, but the commonalities go beyond the usual suspects (eg, 'The Thing' (1982), 'The Vanishing' (1988)).  You, me, and GothamCity151 should go bowling sometime.

I would be delighted to take you up on that offer! :)
