More lists!

my haven't seens for SOF:

44. The Proposition (2005)
57. Born on the Fourth of July (1989)
72. The Constant Gardener (2005)
73. Dead Man Walking (1995)
75. Coming Home (1978)
79. 3:10 to Yuma (2007)

Overall your list is a little heavy on modern American movies for my taste, but anyone with All That Jazz in their top 20 is a-okay with me.

And my list of shame for PA:

20.   Conte d'été   (1996)
36.   Be with Me   (2005)
40.   Now   (1965)
43.   Ilha das Flores   (1990)
86.   Flesh and the Devil   (1926)

Be sure to include English titles when you send in your list... I, for one, keep forgetting that Sans toit ni loi is Vagabond.  I didn't know -- or maybe I'd forgotten -- that you were so fond of Persona.  Detective Story is a really unusual pick.  And so many shorts!  Was that a tough decision?

Wow!

StudentOFilm your #1 and PeacefulAnarchy, your #2!

Have either of you written about those films? I'd like to read them. :)
I haven't watched it in the last year, so certainly not here, and judging by my criticker review probably not anywhere. I can say that of all the films in my top 100 it's the one that made the biggest leap from first viewing to subsequent ones. Maybe it's because I first watched when I was just getting into film and the style was so overwhelming, but I remember thinking it was just a solid movie nothing more. It kept nagging at me, though and when I rewatched it everything just clicked. The fantastical aspects made sense and everything clicked emotionally, what had been holding me back suddenly became what made me enamoured with the film. It held up on subsequent viewings too, though it's been a while. I really need to rewatch a lot of these films.

I almost didn't put English titles for any of them, since I have imdb set to original titles. I went through most of them but I always forget the French ones. I certainly mention Persona as a favourite every once in a while, but I've never written anything of substance about it because it's been a while and it was such a visceral emotional experience. I'd have to rewatch it to have anything to say and I can never bring myself to the emotional place to do that.

As for Detective Story I know you don't think much of it but it doesn't seem that unusual to me. It combines my love for really pointed brutal noir with dialogue heavy films. It doesn't have the cinematography of many other noirs, granted, but the screenplay and performances are so raw it works for much the same reason Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? works. It turns the central mystery inwards towards Kirk Douglas' demons and as you watch his character push himself towards the edge there a great mix of sympathy and frustration. All the side stories are so perfectly tied to the movie's beats, it's great.

As for shorts it wasn't any tougher a decision than anything else. Powers of Ten had me wondering if I should push it down and I had Lily and Jim in the mix before I decided to leave it off, but the other four are in the top 50 and I wouldn't want it any other way. Each one is so amazing in its own way and it just wouldn't be fair to my tastes to leave them off. I think I've seen like 1000 shorts so they're still underrepresented proportionally.

Thanks for letting me know PeacefulAnarchy. :) I love when movies can do that, especially the nagging part, where it calls for you to watch it again.

Have either of you written about those films? I'd like to read them. :)

I've been tempted to, but I honestly have trouble putting my thoughts into words when it comes to my all-time favorites. The best I can say is how that after I saw Schindler's List, I was on the verge. Of what, I don't really know. Just that a movie had never left me so emotionally exhausted in both the happiest and saddest senses of an emotional spectrum. That is usually how I know when a movie has moved me to such a degree, when anything I say just really can't do it justice.

Overall your list is a little heavy on modern American movies for my taste, but anyone with All That Jazz in their top 20 is a-okay with me.

Yeah, that's where my interests and tastes seem to lie. And I know you and several others will agree with me that Roy Scheider's performance in All That Jazz is phenomenal.
