Top 20

1. Modern Times (Charlie Chaplin, 1936)
2. Back to the Future (Robert Zemeckis, 1985)
3. The Shawshank Redemption (Frank Darabont, 1994)
4. The Truman Show (Peter Weir, 1998)
5. Wild Strawberries (Ingmar Bergman, 1957)
6. Tootsie (Sidney Pollack, 1982)
7. A Hard Day’s Night (Richard Lester, 1964)
8. Tokyo Story (Yasujiro Ozu, 1953)
9. A Beautiful Mind (Ron Howard, 2001)
10. Nebraska (Alexander Payne, 2013)
11. Rushmore (Wes Anderson, 1998)
12. It’s a Wonderful Life (Frank Capra, 1946)
13. Star Wars: A New Hope (George Lucas, 1977)
14. Sunrise (F.W. Murnau, 1927)
15. The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967)
16. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (Mel Stuart, 1971)
17. The Unknown (Tod Browning, 1927)
18. Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958)
19. One Hour Photo (Mark Romanek, 2002)
20. Planet of the Apes (Franklin J. Schaffner, 1968)

Revamping my list, starting with the top 20. Nebraska, Rushmore, Willy Wonka, and It's a Wonderful Life have all been bumped up considerably from where they were before on my top list of films. Star Wars has gone down a few pegs, partially from overexposure to the franchise in the past couple of years. Wild Strawberries is up in the top 5 now, knocking Tootsie down a spot on the list. There's been some further shuffling in the 11-20 range. American Beauty is out for now due to the Kevin Spacey factor; at the moment I'm having trouble separating the sleazebag actor from his character. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Raise the Red Lantern almost made it to the top 20 but both need a rewatch first to make sure.

As of now I'm planning to keep working on the list, perhaps to get up to an even hundred.

Great work putting that together, and going gif for the top 10.

Not meaning this in any obvious way, but a scroll thru your screenshots is a cinematic journey for the eyes. I can hear Chuck Workman montage music playing in the background.

Really nice list. I've seen 77 and there's a fair amount of overlap with my own Top 100.

One of these days I'll get around to rewatching Inside Llewyn Davis. I love the Coen Brothers, but that film did absolutely nothing for me.

Seen all but three, two of which are not available to me in any format. Assault on Precinct 13 it is!

Wonderful list, Teproc.  Ten I haven’t seen and I think they all sound great.  On the other hand, Grave of the Fireflies is showing in GhibliFest this month, and Pink Floyd: The Wall is on my new marathon, so I might double up on these.

Thanks, it took a bit of time but it was fun to do. My reference for those montages is more David Ehrlich and his year-end videos (or Jonathan Keogh's videos for the imdb 150 and other lists), I'll have to check out Chuck Workman.

If you (and 1S0, who only has 4 or 5 unseen I think) feel too restricted, I could do an extended list so that you have more options.

What kind of masochist watches Grave of the Fireflies a second time?

(Don't bring your kids.)

@Teproc:

I should think recency bias is bound to get worse if you're part of the people who watch a lot of new releases as a percentage of your total movie watching. Every year some excellent movies are released and some are bound to make it to your Top 100.

I want to watch it again because I was strangely numb the first time I watched it.  I feel that I didn’t have a full experience of the film.   As for my kids, the youngest is 17, so if they want to come, I’m happy to have them.  But they seem to have no interest.
