Oooh this is fun OK

Brokeback Mountain...because being stuck on a deserted island isnt depressing enough
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Its A Wonderful Life
The Color Purple
Eternal Sunshine
Moulin Rouge
Me and You and Everyone We Know
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Mystic River/Gone Baby Gone (yeah its cheating so sue me...theyre both Denis Lehane adaptations)
There Will Be Blood
Sunset Boulevard
Finding Nemo
Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion
Titanic (Screw all the skeptics this movie still keeps me entertained despite coming on cable every Saturday, I think its safe to say its with stood the test of time)
Bad Education
Maria Full of Grace
Shortbus
Modern Times (If only to watch the mechanical feeding machine scene over and over)
Before Sunset
City of Men

Film I'd throw into the water even if it was the only movie on a deserted island: Tie Casablana & Citizen Kane

I also dont think its fair to say a film cant be considered a masterpiece just because its not old. For example, movies like Brokeback, Eternal Sunshine, and Maria Full of Grace ive watched multiple times even though they've only been out a couple years, and each time theyve had the same impact on me as before. I've also watched Eli Sunday's sermon in There Will Be Blood about a million times now and I still get chills down my spine. On the other hand I've seen Citizen Kane twice. The first time I fell asleep, the second time I stayed awake and have never been happier when a movie ends.
And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

It's tough, narrowing this down to 20, even when you have a list premade.

The Maltese Falcon (1941)
The 400 Blows (1959)
Annie Hall (1977)
Breathless (1960)
Vertigo (1958)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
The Bicycle Thief (1948)
Days of Heaven (1978)
Casablanca (1942)
F for Fake (1974)
Chinatown (1974)
Roman Holiday (1953)
8 ½ (1963)
The Seventh Seal (1957)
In the Mood For Love (2001)
A Woman is a Woman (1961)
Taxi Driver (1976)
Week End (1967)
L’Avventura (1960)
Seven Samurai (1954)

I've been reworking this list A LOT.  So let us see where it leads...

1.The Graduate
2.The Empire Strikes Back
3.Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
4.Raiders of the Lost Ark
5.Back to the Future
6.Beautiful Girls
7.Dead Poet's Society
8.Pride & Prejudice
9.The Goonies
10.The Third Man
11.Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Stand By Me
Jaws
Network
The Princess Bride
Casablanca
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Rear Window
Donnie Darko
Kes

This is REAL ROUGH.  I'm going to have to think on it a bit more, but that's twenty.

I did a little tally so far because I was curious:

Of course there are MANY movies picked twice and once, I'm just narrowing it down for discussion sake. Also note anyone who had a starwars film in their list I simply classified it as a "Starwars" pick... and if anyone had two, three or even 4 starwars movies in their list I simply counted that as one overall pick... just to simplify things. Same goes for Lord of the Rings.

SO, is there anyone who hasn't yet seen something on that list?

I for one haven't seen Touch of Evil, Chungking Express, Once Upon A Time In The West , and Lost in Translation. I'll go add them to my netflix queue.  :D They've just gotta be good.
