4. Goodfellas
5. Godfather II
6. Dr. Strangelove
7. Lost in Translation
8. Casablanca
9. High Fidelity
10. Millennium Mambo
11. City of God
12. Until the End of the World
13. The Matrix

EDIT: 21. Pulp Fiction - how could I forget this film?

Now these aren't what I think are the 20 greatest films ever made but the 20 that I can think of that touched me in some way, that made me realize and contemplate the power of film. Jaws and Star Wars being the two that affected me earliest in life and probably the most deeply.

You just reminded me to watch Angel's Egg. It's been on my list of things to watch for a long time.

Umi ga Kikoeru is pretty damn good but I have to throw my love to Only Yesterday as the overlooked ghibli masterpiece. Millennium Actress is definitely the crowning achievement of Satoshi Kon along with Paranoia Agent. As for Honneamise, it's technically impressive but leaves me pretty cold. I'm more a of a Mind Game/Cat Soup kinda guy, ya know?

Also, I love your avatar. It makes me want to watch it again.

Only Yesterday deserves a DVD release, but it did get shown on TCM back in January of '06.  Honneamise and Akira are the two films that I most closely associate with the heights of the golden age/bubble economy in Japaneses animation.  And as great and innovative as Mind Game is, I have a deep love for hand drawn cell animation.

Have fun trying to wrap your mind around Angel's Egg...
