Top 5 Films Defined by a Single Scene
« on: September 09, 2009, 05:14:32 PM »
There are some films that just completely fall away from memory except for a single scene that seems to define them.

Is this just a thing with me or are other people having this experience?

In no order:

Taxi Driver - the rescue scene with the miming of the finger guns
Oldboy - the confrontation scene with the tongue.
The Passion of Joan of Arc - Joan's face
Day Watch - the car driving across the side of the hotel
The Matrix - Neo in air about to smash into Agent Smith

You light a man a fire, and he's warm for a night. You light a man ON fire, and he's warm for the rest of his life.

I like this...

These ones comes to mind, although I'm not sure all of them match your criteria perfectly

The Passion of Joan of Arc - Joan's face
Half the film is her face. Which scene in particular?

I was thinking the one where she answered the question from the inquisitor in a way that baffled him.

The "You can't handle the truth!" scene from A Few Good Men was one mentioned on the Slate Cultural Podcast this week.

Fair enough, I just wanted a particular scene to lock my mind onto.

Great suggestion there.  I honestly don't remember another scene from that movie!

For me, Deliverance is two scenes: that and Dueling Banjos.
