Watching Fear, Anxiety & Depression tonight, will have to see about Mr. Jealousy & Highball, for now I'll give my vote for Todd, more thoughts to come.

Both have films for 2011.

Noah Baumbach.  His writing with Wes Anderson alone get's the vote, but then he went and made Kicking and Screaming, which is probably top 100 material for me.  Add to that the Squid and the Whale and you have him leaving Solondz in the dust.

Based on what I've seen from them...

Baumbach- I liked The Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Greenberg. I didn't like The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

Solondz- I liked Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness. I didn't like Life During Wartime.

Baumbach wins by 2 films for me.

just saw Fear, Anxiety & Depression, a rank the 10 out 12 films I've seen by these two

1 - HAPPINESS
2 - WELCOME TO THE DOOLHOUSE
3 - LIFE DURING WARTIME
4 - KICKING & SCREAMING
5 - PALINDROMES
6 - THE SQUID & THE WHALE
7 - FEAR ANXIETY & DEPRESSION
8 - STORYTELLING
9 - GREENBERG
10 - MARGOT AT THE WEDDING

you put these films in a list, man r they despicable. Happiness stays out as a masterpiece for me.

I would go:

Good to Great
Happiness
Dollhouse
Greenberg
Squid
Palindromes
Kicking
Wartime

Meh
Highball

Bad
Storytelling
Margot

So as a director I have to go Solondz but factoring in his writing of Mr. Fox and Zissou, Baumbach would have the overall edge.

I agree with Happiness being some sort of/something close to a masterpiece. Roger Ebert summed it up very well.

"...the depraved are only seeking what we all seek, but with a lack of ordinary moral vision...In a film that looks into the abyss of human despair, there is the horrifying suggestion that these characters may not be grotesque exceptions, but may in fact be part of the mainstream of humanity... It is not a film for most people. It is certainly for adults only. But it shows Todd Solondz as a filmmaker who deserves attention, who hears the unhappiness in the air and seeks its sources."

Both directors r rather dry and subdued, though Solondz went structurly big on Happiness and it paid off.

Am I'm the only one here who likes only Baumbach's first film, to be honest I hate him and the sort of film he represents, as Kermode put it ''sub-Bergman-esce self-indulgent petchalent crap'
