Sure there is some reveling in violence in QT's work, thus my point about how they are similar in kind but not degree.

A little diagram to illustrate my point.

Bourne series----------->QT movies---->Inglourious Basterds--------->Halloween------>Friday the 13th (2009)----------------------------------->Hostel

my point is more in the claim that Tarantino's work (minus IB, for me, but seemingly not for others) doesn't have anything i see as social commentary.  with IB, the Hostel films, and many other films often called torture porn, there is actually a reason why the violence is being used.  it seems to me that if the violence (disturbing imagery/content/non-normative behavior) is in service to cultural criticism, it is different than if there is no cultural commentary going on.  it is similar to using offensive language to make a point versus using offensive language as a slur - does that make sense?

Sure if there was actual social commentary in these movies (Hostel, Saw) but you are alone in that analysis I am afraid.

So, another way you could go is the supernatural vs. natural horror. And then you could look at the series that blend the two (Halloween and so on and so forth).

i found what i wrote on the film from a while back, i don't think i've seen it since then - how does this sound?  feel free to click the link for the panel on horror at the bottom, they are basically discussing the statements they see many of these films making
But I wish the public could, in the midst of its pleasures, see how blatantly it is being spoon-fed, and ask for slightly better dreams.

I really recommend the original Dawn of the Dead.  Love that movie, total classic, and gory fun as well.  If you want some recent stuff, 28 Days Later, The Descent, [REC] and A Tale of Two Sisters are the best of the new horror.

I’ve lied to men who wear belts. I’ve lied to men who wear suspenders. But I’d never be so stupid as to lie to a man who wears both a belt and suspenders.

The Serpent and the Rainbow - I can't wait to revisit this movie.

How long ago did you see it?  Because you might want to leave well enough alone with that one.  :)

So yeah, I don't like horror films and get frightened easily. As such, I'm going to dedicate October to watching some horror films. What do I watch?

I'd love to contribute suggestions, but could you lay out what you've seen, what you liked (if anything), and what you'd like to see (generally speaking)?

Good for you for doing this marathon. I shit my pants watching most horror movies, so I can appreciate your ambition.

Have you already seen a lot of the 'big ones'?

If it's a horror film, just assume that I have not seen it. So no, I have not seen the 'big ones.'

For zarodinu and pix, I think the only 'horror' film I have partially watched was the original Night of the Living Dead, and I stopped both times about 45-1 hour in because the film was terrible. I'm pretty sure that is it. I also saw the Kennan and Kel Headless Knight Halloween special when it first came out. That's about it though, I think.

Well in that case, The Exorcist was probably the most unsettling movie I've ever seen.
