Keep the Lights On! (Generic Horror Marathon)
« on: September 17, 2009, 09:22:46 PM »
So yeah, I don't like horror films and get frightened easily. As such, I'm going to dedicate October to watching some horror films. What do I watch?

Good for you for doing this marathon. I shit my pants watching most horror movies, so I can appreciate your ambition.

Have you already seen a lot of the 'big ones'?

The Serpent and the Rainbow - I can't wait to revisit this movie.

So many ways to approach this depending on what you want to experience.

I was thinking you should start soft, maybe stick to Pre 1970's B&W horror like Cat People and The Haunting.

Or maybe a marathon of Horror films that aren't rated R.

Or take the Masters of Horror (Craven, Carpenter...you decide) and watch their most popular film.

Whichever way you go, I'd be happy to help with interesting suggestions.

i'm not sure what makes you label a film torture porn (Tarantino with his stylized violence ;) ), but there are many films that some people call torture porn that are quite good (redeeming messages, and all)
But I wish the public could, in the midst of its pleasures, see how blatantly it is being spoon-fed, and ask for slightly better dreams.

I have not seen very many but Hostel, Hostel II, Saw I and II, Wolf Creek and The Passion of the Christ are among the lowest forms of film art ever. They lack any redeeming qualities.

I wish we could start a Horror thread without it devolving into another soapbox on Torture Porn.  And I'm not defending the sub-genre so much as I simply see it as a passing (passed?) fad.

And it's left more interesting data behind than the serial killer genre.

It's passed? Isn't there a saw film coming out in a couple months and Roth is working on his next pile of excrement.

There are good horror movies which is why I am telling FLY to avoid this terrible sub-genre.
