2.  Mr. Death - A brilliant documentary by Errol Morris (Fog of War) which NOBODY saw.  Its about the trials and tribulations of an engineer who makes execution equipment for a living.  Never has the banality of evil been better portrayed.

Thanks for the heads up. I swear I've looked through Morris's filmography a couple times, but for some reason I've never heard of this. I'll check it out.

Mr. Death is his best film, rivals Grizzly Man for my favorite documentary of all time.  Cannot recommend it enough.

Hotaru No Haka (Grave Of The Fireflies)
--There are two forms of evil on display in this picture, the evil of war and the evil of immaturity. The war parts are bad enough, but once you realize that the fate of the children could have been avoided simply by Setsuko taking one on the chin and admitting he was wrong to his aunt you realize how evil immaturity can make the world around you.

That's a really good observation, Setsuko and his sisters troubles were partially his fault (not to diminish the horrible things that happened to them through no fault of their own).  He should have stayed at the relatives home despite being treated badly.  I think his sin is not so much immaturity which he cannot be faulted for but pride.  You see him caught up in Japanese militarism and the myth of inevitable victory.  He is too proud to stay in a home where he is treated badly.

I think that in a way he is a stand in for the entire nation of Japan; both in his ignorant pride, and his terrible suffering.

I’ve lied to men who wear belts. I’ve lied to men who wear suspenders. But I’d never be so stupid as to lie to a man who wears both a belt and suspenders.

Yes!  And I'm looking forward to reading Melvil's review of it tomorrow.
