In laymans terms can someone describe to me what an SLR camera is? I tried to understand but I just couldn't get a grasp of it.

Is it not a camera where the view you see when looking at through the view finder is what is coming through the lens?  As opposed to one where it does not go through the lens so you might have a slightly different view after snapping the photo?

Though maybe not correct, I tend to view the digital SLR camera's as those with lens that you can change and swap vs the smaller ones were you have no ability to swap out the lens

SLR (single-lens reflex) uses one lens and a mirror to direct light to the viewfinder so that in theory the photography can see exactly what the lens will capture. High end SLR cameras also have interchangeable lenses and such. Digital SLRs are basically those fancy digital cameras where you can change lenses, plus they use that mirror technique.

A related question;

Are movie cameras (like the Red ect) direct view or reflected view?

I always kind of assumed they were direct view, but I really have no idea.
