Saw an extended trailer tonight for the new A Christmas Carrol tonight.  I've decided I'm refusing to watch it.

I will generally give a movie about 40 minutes to make me anything but bored. If I am bored and do not care about anything I cut it around 40 minutes. If I don't like something, or I wonder about how even one character will end up, I will stick with it til the end.

Does anybody else have a general cut time, or are you all sticklers for seeing a movie from start to finish?

Some well regarded movies that I've cut at ~40 minutes through sheer boredom:

Babel
Revolutionary Road
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
Good Night and Good Luck
I'm Not There
Syriana
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

I used to stick it out no matter what. Now I don't care. There's no time limit. If I do stop it's usually around the 1 hour mark.

There are about 4 films I simply quit watching.

I know two are Gigantic and From Dusk Till Dawn.

You quit FDTD, but finished Crank?  Guess it must've been just that day.

If I take the time to put it in the queue, prioritize in the list for three months, allow it to come to the top, wait for it to get sent out, slot it in one of two possible weekly DVD-watching timeslots, battle to preserve that timeslot with all the various demands of my time - I admittedly have very little patience.

For instance just in the past 9 months or so: Get Smart and Confessions of a Shopaholic didn't make it past 15 minutes.

There are a few I just started fast forwarding through.  Hancock was one.

Probably my most unpopular premature eject-ulation was Happy Go Lucky.  A gave that about an hour....although I think I'll give that another try sometime.

Totally.

In my mind, if there's a portion of the film (even 15 minutes) that is so boring/bad that it makes you want to stop watching, what are the chances that it was going to recover and be one of your favourites anyways? It just seems very unlikely that you'll miss anything by stopping when you feel like stopping.

I am still in the stick with it stage in my life. I snuck into The Time Traveler's Wife and there were multiple times I wanted to leave, but I still hang on to the hope that there will be an ending that brings it all together or at least be a good moment somewhere down the line. I haven't lost my wherewithal yet.

i wish i didnt feel so guilty turning a movie off.

I thought all of these movies really sucked, yet I watched them all all the way through.
