Diane Keaton's latter performances are making me hate her ealier ones. I almost hate to revist the Godfather after having seen Somethings Gotta Give
oh and the music to Baby Boom is a rip off of St Elmo's Fire
I blame it on Nancy Meyers. She has a talent for taking otherwise talented, likeable actors and making them look like chumps:
Something's Gotta Give — Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson
The Holiday — Kate Winslet, Jude Law
It's Complicated — Meryl Streep, Jack Donaghy
You can spot a Nancy Meyers movie from forty paces. The trailer will contain these: Older actresses who flip their hair in a fit of schoolgirl giggling. Older actors who serve as set dressing. Wardrobe from a J. Crew or Ralph Lauren winter catalog. Frosty windows. Upbeat-yet-basso announcer voice. A smile or inhuman grin in every single shot.
Interesting point!
Something's Gotta Give was the particular performance I was thinking of. I SOOOOO want to like her in this - I root for the character, but she just keeps GETTING ON MY NERVES like watching a family member embarress themselves at a party. Watching
Baby Boom I started seeing these little tics that reminded me of the SGG performance and it just kept taking me out of the thing. Oh well. Maybe a Godfather viewing is mandatory at this point to set me right!
