I also write reviews of most things I see so I don't want other people's words in my mind when I go to write a movie review.

Makes sense. There are few things I like to write less than reviews/critical essays, etc., so I don't share that concern.

Is it good?

The reduction of criticism down to a simple "yay" or "nay" only serves to devalue an already dubious profession.

And what would you suggest as a way of narrowing down from 1000 films that exist to 100 films I actually have time to watch? At some point it is going to come down to I should or I shouldn't or rather, I do or I don't.

Does it really matter? For you, especially. You're never going to find someone with whom your tastes line up so perfectly that a recommendation is going to mean much of anything. But delving into the details--why the critic came to the judgment he/she did, rather than just a simple statement of said judgment--gives context and perspective to the question of whether you should invest your time or not.

I don't understand the brackets threads.  I am intrigued, but am clueless as to how I'm supposed to engage with them.

The brackets are tournaments of heartbreak and unparalleled fun. Participants (that could be you!) are assigned matchups, go watch experience the films, and then report back declaring a winner. The losing film is eliminated and the winning film advances. The US 90s Bracket is over, but the 90s Far East and 80s US tournaments are active and always looking for partakers.

To request a matchup, post here for US 80s, and here for Far East 90s.

That sounds like a lot of fun.  Thanks, Matt!

One day Mitch McConnell is going to fall head first into a woodchipper and that will be the day that I finally win my battle against erectile dysfunction.

Some days, I just don't care for this movie nonsense.
