How come/when did it start? Never used "Jim" or anything?
Might FLY suggest going by James Blake?
My grandfather's name is James, so I'm named after him but called by my middle name. Most people call him Jim, so I could never see myself as a Jim. James Blake would be rad, but confusing since there's already 2 famous James Blakes out there.
I like calling you Sam, but in the back of my mind is James. Do you like being called Sam?
Yes. It was something I picked back in the day more because I needed a handle and my favorite character from LotR was Sam, but I've grown liking the name more. Fun fact: my other grandfather's name was Sam and his son (my dad's brother) is also named Sam. Not sure how Sam skipped the next generation as none of my cousins are named Sam, but I think I want to bring it back to the family.
