Top 5 Characters From Coen Brothers Films
« on: October 01, 2009, 06:08:00 PM »
I pumped for A Serious Man, I think it will be a return to form for the brothers comedies.  In anticipation of the entrance of Professor Gopnik into the pantheon, what are your favorite Coen brothers characters?

10. Tom Reagan - Millers Crossing
9.  Carl Showalter - Fargo
8.  Bernie Bernbaum - Millers Crossing
7.  Jerry Lundegaard - Fargo
6.  Sheriff Ed Tom Bell - No Country for Old Men

5.  Barton Fink - Take a guess
4.  The Dude - The Big Lebowski
3.  Anton Chigurh - No Country for Old Men
2.  Walter Sobchak - The Big Lebowski
1.  Sheriff Marge Gunderson - Fargo
I’ve lied to men who wear belts. I’ve lied to men who wear suspenders. But I’d never be so stupid as to lie to a man who wears both a belt and suspenders.

Tom Reagan is the obvious choice. He's my faourite because he is our main character, he knows all the angles, but doesn't seem to care about any of them. He is heartless in a way, but he's utterly fascinating.

The others:

The Dude
Marge
Chigurh
Riedenschneider
I actually consider a lot of movies to be life-changing! I take them to my heart and they melt into my personality.

I mean its pretty impossible not to leave some people out and I can probably make a list of about 3 from each film so I'll try to limit myself to one a movie:

5. Bernie Bernbaum -- Miller's Crossing (and he is just such a worm but played so well, I mean he got me with the first speech also and pretty much giving the same thing a second time I also wanted him dead)
4. Anton Chigurh -- No Country For Old Men (he's a guy to admire in this crazy world cause at least he has some principals)
3. Loren Visser -- Blood Simple (the first in a line of many great bad guys he is still really one of the best)
2. Charlie Meadows -- Barton Fink (John Goodman can actually act... really! Though running through a burning building with a shotgun doesn't hurt)
1. Carl Showalter -- Fargo (I seem to like people who do not know when to shut up, I just love Buscemi and I just rewatched this yesterday so I gotta put a Fargo pick as #1)

I just noticed there are no 'good guys' (well Charlie Meadows maybe if anyone) on my list nor any of their comedies. 2 pure evil, 2 semi-evil idiots, and john goodman yup sounds like the Coen brothers.
