1. My first name is not Blake, it's Josef.. I'm named after my great uncle, who was a train conductor in Sweden. Josef Blake Holstrom.
2. During a summer semester in Rome, a friend and I biked from Rome to Naples in under 24 hours with only a compass to guide us.
3. I severed my pinky finger when I was 8, and subsequently had it sewn back on by my father (who was a volunteer EMT).
4. I climbed a mountain barefoot on a bet.
5. I won a "Best Essay" award at a Phi Alpha Theta Historical Society conference at West Point Military Academy and it was then submitted for publication.

.... never heard back on that last one.  :-\

Did it heal properly?  nerves and all?

More or less, it does not bend as well as my left hand, but it's never got in the way of any of my hobbies (guitar, pinky wrestling, etc.).

I remember a story about a bike trip to Naples and you ended up stranded or something?

I'd also be interested to know the topic of your essay.

My middle name is Blake as well and that's what most people call me. Never brought it up because I figured that would just be confusing.

Boring stuff, really. I was calling on Colonel T. X. Hammes' (US) hypothesis of a "fourth generation warfare" was being used in the Iraq War (using minimalist resources, manipulating media coverage, guerilla tactics, etc.), noting that we were fighting with 3rd generation, Clausewitzian tactics (strength in numbers, highly trained soldier, advanced technologies, etc.) against an unconventional war. I also used the snafu in Mogadishu to support my theory. Now, of course, this was before we actually started a legitimate counter-insurgency in Iraq, so I guess that's why they picked me. I'm not too confident in my writing. In addition, being a crunchy liberal kid from Boston and spouting off military analysis in front of many shaved heads at West Point was close to horrifying...

I assume you used Black Hawk Down as a source.

Haha, no.. but I'm sure some explosions would have spiced up my presentation.
