Billy Wilder is the topic. 10 weeks, 10 films.

Wouldn't it be great if UC had something similar to the open source courses at MIT?...

Have you guys finalized a list of which films you are going to discuss yet?

We haven't.

For sure (obvious)
Double Indemnity (1944)
Sunset Blvd. (1950)
The Apartment (1960)
Some Like It Hot (1959)

In the mix
The Lost Weekend (1945)
Ace in the Hole (1951)
Ninotchka (1939)
The Major and the Minor (1942)
Stalag 17 (1953)
Sabrina
Seven Year Itch

I need to finish Kiss Me, Stupid... but it's doing nothing for me at the moment.

That's too bad. Of the one Billy Wilder movies I've seen, it's my favorite.

Why? It's silly fun at best.

Yes. That's why I liked it. Also, it does some interesting things with Dean Martin's character/persona, if my memory can be trusted.

You must do Stalag 17. It's the template all POW films use, even The Great Escape. It's an all-male cast, too. For a director who wielded sex like no other, it's a nice departure.

We'll see if Ballgame approves, but right now this is my proposed syllabus:

“We’re both rotten.”
“Only you’re a little more rotten.”

Double Indemnity (1944)
The Lost Weekend (1945)
Sunset Blvd. (1950)

“Why can't I ever fall in love with someone nice like you?”

A Foreign Affair (1948)
Sabrina (1954)
The Seven Year Itch (1955)
Some Like It Hot (1959)
The Apartment (1960)

“I don't know about you, but it always makes me sore when I see those war pictures...”

Stalag 17 (1953)
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970)

Saw the registration info...my frequent flier miles won't last 10 weeks! Is there any chance this could be made available as an online class [or at least the lectures posted or streamed]? I could start a petition! I'll go all Norma Rae, or failing that, Elle Woods!

And if that doesn't work, I assume you'll be doing a concurrent Wilder marathon on the show, yes? Wilder + Filmspotting...I can't miss this!
