Awesome lists, everyone! Performances are not something I keep track of close enough to make my own list with any sense of competency, but I'm really enjoying seeing what you all have come up with.

I'm learning a lot reading everyone's lists.  So glad to see so many people participating

6. Song kang-ho – Memories of Murder
Again, an incredibly charismatic actor more than a great actor.  But this is good.  Personally, I'd go for Mr. Vengeance.

Behind the incredible charisma - a good enough asset to be on my list - is Song kang-ho's brilliant transition from violent/comedic buffoon to a man haunted by the need to know, and by his inability to do so. Compare and contrast to Robert Downey Jr in Zodiac. Song wins...
I agree and I hope OTHERS ARE READING!!!

I've seen it, and flieger is spot on. He has the rare face that can be comic relief (The Host) and grief stricken protagonist (Mr. Vengenance) and at the same time (Memories Of Murder, J.S.A., Thirst).

He's a wonderful actor, and Memories Of Murder is my favorite performance from him.

Top 20 Female Performances

1) Diane Keaton – LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR
2) Gena Rowlands – A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE
3) Meryl Streep – SOPHIE’S CHOICE
4) Emily Watson – BREAKING THE WAVES
5) Gloria Swanson – SUNSET BLVD.
6) Liv Ullmann – SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE
7) Jane Fonda - THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY?
8. Glen Close – DANGEROUS LIAISONS
9) Kathy Bates – DOLORES CLAIBORNE
10) Louise Fletcher – ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST
11) Faye Dunaway – BONNIE & CLYDE
12) Anne Bancroft – THE GRADUATE
13) Julia Roberts – ERIN BROCKOVICH
14) Ellen Burstyn – REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
15) Jodie Foster – THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS
16) Jennifer Connelly – REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
17) Charlize Theron – MONSTER
18) Natalie Portman – LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL
19) Barbara Stanwyck – THE LADY EVE
20) Rosalind Russell – HIS GIRL FRIDAY

I don't know what it says about me that I love Female performances where the character is mentally losing it or has already lost it.  My Top 7 are all women having a mental breakdown.

I can't stress enough how many of you need to add a few of these films to your education.  Not enough of you have 1, 2, 4, 6 and 9 in your knowledge bank or DVD queue.  If we all saw the eligible films, I'd be much more certain of their ability to make the final list.

Excellent female list Holly Harry. I had Watson and Karina on my longer list, but completely forgot to put on Streep [Silkwood], Keaton, McDormand and Deborah Kerr.  :-[

Must watch Nights of Cabiria... you and roujin rate it highly... and I'd never even heard of it.  :-[

And glad to see lots of love for Song kang-ho...

{...} but this is one of the greatest acting jobs ever.

Truer words have never been spoken on Filmspotting.

6) Liv Ullmann – SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE

Sadly, only you, me, and Toro listed this sublime performance.

What????

This strikes me as extremely weird. You seem to have seen or are aware of every film in the canon. Is Fellini just not a filmmaker you've explored?

It was on my initial list. I decided to go with Bibi.
