Oh god what do they do with Faramir? See this is why I never watched them!

Hey.  We're gonna do this together.  You're gonna start a post of when you'll be watching.  I know these movies inside and out.  We'll watch them together.  Okay?  Okay.  And when you see something you hate, you'll stop your DVD and I'll just talk you through it.  They are excellent movies, very very good.  Of *course* you will find things that seem like blasphemy.  That's because you are smart.  But even though--even though-- some of this stuff makes Tolkien roll in his grave, on the whole you are going to have a good time.  Okay?  So this will happen.

And... Do you drink?

Here I go again, encouraging vice, but you aren't in AA or anythingofcourseyou'renotwe'reallgonnaberealcoolbabyrealcool.  We'll just have a beer or two and watch this thing.

So: when was the last time you read FOTR?

Off the top of my head I can't remember what was added in the Extended Edition, so I'm just going with the theatrical version of Fellowship.  It was long enough anyway.

The Extended Edition added a lot. One of the more significant elements was the gift giving by Galadriel.

Meh.  I'm fine with the theatrical cut.

If you like Faramir in the book (or Gimli or Treebeard or a number of others, for that matter), you'll hate it.

The Two Towers was the worst-- what they did to Faramir is unforgivable.

Didn't care myself, it's a different medium, so they didn't do anything to him because he's not the same character from the books.

I understand your point but that reasoning is a stretch.

How is it a stretch? The books have no bearing for me whatsoever on what is shown to me on screen, therefore there isn't anything for me to get upset about when they do something to a minor character in the movies who is only more important in the books.

I read the books, but don't remember how that version of Faramir differs from the one in the film.  I guess I just don't have a very good memory in general. :)

It's pretty major:

In the book he pretty much just let Frodo go and gave up the temptation of the ring without a second thought, in the book he's prepared to take the ring back to his father so they can "save the race of men." I think it's a good way to get the battle of Osgiliath into the film but it still makes me shake my head.

The extended editions are now out of print. You have to get them used if you want them. They're worth it.

Are they? Amazon still has new ones listed from alternative sellers I think. haven't check into them yet. Either way, I may buy them.

Well, yeah, but they don't have them to buy now, because they're out of print.

I went with The Two Towers-Extended Edition.

Notably for the flashback sequence between Faramir and Boromir, Pip & Merry finding food, and Faramir leading Frodo, Sam, & Gollum to their escape.
