Black Dynamite
« on: January 13, 2010, 01:13:16 AM »
Just wanted to share some of the great dialogue from this very enjoyable film.

"It may be bigger than you, and it may be bigger than me, but it ain’t bigger than you and me."

"How many times I have to tell you not to call here and interrupt my kung fu."

"Look at this place.  You must have an 8-track player in every room."

During a Flashback...
"I am 18-year-old Black Dynamite and you’re my 16-year-old kid brother."

You see how the film carefully straddles the line between serious and spoof.

CIA - "The last thing we need is you running through the streets creating a river of blood."
BLACK DYNAMITE - "You tell me who did it and I’ll just leave a little puddle."

And finally there's a great monologue Black Dynamite delivers about his time in Vietnam...

"This one child I’ll never forget.  Poor little bastard was still alive. Little Chinese legs were blown clean off.  Could still see his little shins and feet hanging from the celing fan across the hut.  He was charred from his head down to his little Chinese knees.  He tried to get up, but he fell over when what was left of his right leg broke off.  As he laid there, flat on his face, he looked up at me.  His little Chinese eyes burnt right into my stomach.  Deep into my soul.  He said something to me in Chinese.  Like “book-ou-so”.  Sounded like some cartoon shit, but I understood it to be a question that he was asking me.  And I don’t have to know how to speak Chinese to know what that question was… “Why, Black Dynamite?  Why?”"

A lot of the credit goes to Michael Jai White who could play it totally straight, but instead plays it as straight as any actor in a blaxploitation film would.  I love the scene with the boom mic in the shot.  He stays in character but his eyes give a couple of quick glances to the mic, which is what another actor might do during the take.  There's a line where someone asks him for a smile and he says "I am smiling".  His face is completely stoic, and yet since we've spent time with the character, we can tell the faintest difference and agree that for Black D.  that would count as a smile.

Awesome movie.

"Aha! I threw that shit before I even entered the room!"

The whole part where they're discussing the plan is hilarious too.

Really funny, but my favorite part was how, even down to the camerawork, it felt so much like a Blaxploitation film, something missing from many modern spoofs. I mean I've only seen Superfly and a few clips of other films, but the aesthetic is definitely there. Took a while for me to get in to the film, but boy did it end great.
