I figured the difference in pace comes from the book, but this one is over-compensating in reflection of following one of the longest movies ever.

Ewan's good, but his character (and another) are part of the most obvious double/triple cross. The casting gives it away.

For sure it messes with the reveals. But also he parachutes from a helicopter.

Updated Rankings

Ransom (1996)
★ ★ ★ – Very Good
There’s more story than the film has time to deal with, which is especially a problem when you’re making a thriller. However, the central story is played very intensely by an All Star cast – headed by Gibson whose on screen presence burns right through his off screen behavior, except for an angry phone call that hits too close to reality – and the central twist is pure genius. (It’s the hook of the film’s trailer, one of my All Time favorites.) Howard makes some amateur mistakes in the last 5 minutes, which is a shame because all the other key scenes are expertly staged and edited.

Grand Theft Auto (1977)
★ ★
The flimsiest excuse for a non-stop chase I’ve seen, and I’ve seen Smokey and the Bandit, the original Gone in 60 Seconds and 1994s The Chase. With the biggest car crashes Roger Corman could afford. (In other words don’t expect anything approaching The Blues Brothers.) There is one pretty amazing shot where Ron’s dad Rance Howard jumps out of a speeding van and attempts to run.

Inferno (2016)
★ ½
The terrible script by David Koepp contains more holes than plot. Ron Howard tries to cover for it with a breathless pace and heaps of surreal visual effects, two things he's not good at. Tom Hanks tries to center this disaster, but he's at home here as he would be in a Transformers movie, which this reminded me of an awful lot. Soulless garbage.

What?! That trailer spoils the film.

FYI: You listed the year as 2015.

Apollo 13
Parenthood

Cinderella Man
Far and Away
Ransom
A Beautiful Mind
Willow
Splash
Eight Days a Week

Backdraft
The Da Vinci Code

A lot of good, not great. Haven't kept up with his last decade other than Eight Days, which I watched not even knowing he was involved.

Pop quiz: How long into the 140-minute runtime of Apollo 13 does Tom Hanks declare, “Houston, we have a problem.”?
