Diffusion

The book talks a lot about diffusion theory but does not really explain it. It was an early archaeological theory (the most widely held) that all civilizations (state-level societies) came from one source and then diffused out through trade and migration. It was actually thought that all technologies were also invented once and diffused (bow and arrow, wheel, calendar, agriculture etc).

Today we know that many technologies development independently many times and that state-level societies developed independently in Europe, Asia and the Americas with no contact between them.

It's a quick read.  I just started this evening and I am about 50 pages in.

I'm not very far in yet, but I'm not really enjoying it so far.  I keep zoning out when things are described in detail for little to no reason, such as the architecture of the Royal Geographical Society building.  Its just not really grabbing my attention.

There's been a few bits of interesting action or drama, and I'm hoping/assuming that those become more frequent later on, but right now I'm having a tough time making myself read it.
