Wow. Sam of all people liked Life is Beautiful. Right on. A good movie for sure. Not deserving of all the hate it has gotten.

I really liked Life is Beautiful and have not just disagreed with the hate it gets but been utterly baffled by it.

I couldn't sit through it.

It was revolting.  That movie is the reason I haven't watched Schindler's List or The Pianist.

WHOA! Life is Beautiful should in no way even come close to being thought of in the same space as Schindler's List.

Oh, Z, you can't judge those films from this one. They're completely different approaches to the holocaust by directors with completely different sensibilities.

Or you could just watch Night and Fog

Or you could just watch Night and Fog

Which has more impact in 30 minutes than Schindler's List has in its 3+ manipulative hours. If you add a viewing of the 20th episode of The World at War - Genocide, then you pretty much have all you need to see in regards to the Final Solution. All the graphic history you will need is encompassed in those two documentaries. If you want to see a more personal assessment of what happened to Jews during the Third Reich, and don't want to be manipulated emotionally, you then would have to tackle the mammoth documentary Shoah.

While I'll agree that Night and Fog is a better portrayal of the actual idea of the holocaust, I don't think that makes the fictional dramataziations of the holocaust a lesser endeavor.

And I think documentaries are just as emotionally manipulative, if not more, as fictional films. Their methods are just more subtle.
