I don't really count Karl in Die Hard. My decision was based mostly on Alan Rickman and and Bruce Willis.

What?  No love for Argyle?

As for No Country, I think Carla Jean's mom being over the top was kinda the point.

Much of the movie strives for pitch-perfect characterizations. In that context, I found her performance pretty distracting (and her scenes thankfully short).

I got love for Argyle. That is why I said "mostly".

Truthfully, the supporting cast in that movie is pretty awful (Karl, Richard Thornburg, Harry Ellis [sigh], Dwayne Robinson, Agent Johnson, Special Agent Johnson) — but, yeah, Willis and Rickman (and Argyle!) more than make up for that.

I agree about the mom in No Country, she really stuck out for me.  On the way home from the theatre, I was trying to think of one thing that didn't work, and she was all I came up with.  She is just such a clash with the rest of the mood of the film, and she really doesn't serve much of a purpose to justify such a contrast.
It's like I've waited my whole life, for this one night.  It's gon' be me you and the dance floor.  We've only got one night.  Double your pleasure, double your fun.  And dance forever.

I left the theater thinking that I would have like Cherry Jones in that part...

and thinking about Cherry Jones made me think of a movie that I think has a perfect cast...

Ocean's 11... forget 12 and 13, Ocean's 11 has one hell of a cast!

You know what movie - or series of movies - have a perfect cast? Or should I say the perfect SUPPORTING cast? Except for the 3 young leads, my vote goes for The Harry Potter films.  What other movie is able to gather up the talents of some of the very best of English thespians like Emma Thomson, David Thewlis, Gary Oldman, Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Richard Harris, Imelda Staunton, Alan Rickman, Julie Walters, Kenneth Branagh, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Brendan Gleeson, Miranda Richardson and I think they also threw Julie Christie in somewhere. These people are the best thing about those movies. One would think Harry, Ron and Hermoine would've picked up a thing or two from them by now, but...

(I know, I know, Gleeson and Branagh are Irish)
