Music and Lyrics, gentle filmspotters.

What.

Or if you wanted to do it properly, you have to watch It Happened One Night (1934). In my opinion, they could have stopped right then and there, because the genre could hardly get any better than this. The Philadelphia Story also needs to be on the list, and I could go on and on if required... :)

Emiliana is so right, Corndog. There is no way that you can crown a victor of romantic comedy without going pre-1960. But your roommate, the foibles, etc.

Keep 'em coming! Knowing my roommate they should be fairly mainstream though too.

From the same writer-director as Did You Hear about the Morgans?!

Ok, you asked for it (trying to go mainstream-ish here):

Penelope (better than it should be - I enjoyed it)
13 Going on 30 (Jennifer Garner is cute and hey, Mark Ruffalo!)
Baby Boom (Diane Keaton!)
Romancing the Stone (not sure if this counts as a rom com, but anyway, it's awesome)
Never Been Kissed (haven't seen it in years, but I remember enjoying it in a my-expectations-are-not-very-high kind of way)
That Touch of Mink (ok, it's older but it's very accessible and very fun)
The Importance of Being Earnest (the old one is way better, but there's a new that's ok, too)
Green Card (well, it's classic, in spite of Andie MacDowell, the non-actress)
Overboard (Goldie Hawn is cute like Meg Ryan! and hey, Kurt Russell!)

Also, I didn't really like The Holiday, but some people do - and Kate Winslet is in it so that's something. Your roommate might like it.

that's the problem, it's only ok.
I actually consider a lot of movies to be life-changing! I take them to my heart and they melt into my personality.

Have you both already seen High Fidelity, C Dub? If not, I would suggest starting there because you're probably not going to find a better one.
