So none of you find The mother's death scene or the cadging of the Frost character tonally inconsistent with the rest of the picture?

No, because even in those moments comedy was present, and the serious side of those scenes was set up from the beginning of the picture. Shaun is sprinkled with moments of seriousness amidst the comedy, much like life actually.
