Pannier bags are important. I chose Arkel, but I've heard good things about Ortlieb. Pack light! I had about 70 pounds worth of gear... a big mistake, especially considering the Bianchi Volpe weighs about 30 lbs. Adventure Cycling has good guides towards long distance tours, but preference is preference. Are you thinking of doing a tour in the future?

70lbs does seem like a lot.

I've only ever done short tours a week at most. I don't have anything planned atm but some time in the future, when I get a proper touring bike, I could see myself doing something longer.

I really want to do this. It looks fantastic.

I'd certainly recommend it to any able-bodied person.

Oh..Never mind then.  :)

Did you do any training or extra excercise in preparation. If so, how much?

You were averaging over 100km a day, which is a long day in my books. I reckon that distance would take me twice as long.

Not really. I live in Boston, so there's not much out here to simulate what I'd be experiencing. I've done some 90 mile day trips before, and I ride my single gear up through the Blue Hills, but again.. the real training is the first two weeks of the trip.

Uri took the kiddos up to the mountain today - gorgeous day in the Pacific NW (I had to stay home and work on stuff for the upcoming fall quarter - boooo!)

Salute to Mt. Baker

Uri's apparently been teaching the girls to rock climb
