Bill's Mega Disney Animated Marathon Thread
« on: July 02, 2010, 12:06:38 PM »
I have decided to do away with the single topics for every movie in the marathon. I am the only one participating anymore, and because of that I have made the executive decision to pool all of the remaining films into this lone topic. I will come back to edit and format it later so that it looks very nice and is actually a topic worthy of these boards. But for now, I'm going to post this and then follow up with the first movie to be included in this all-inclusive topic. Hope you enjoy and by all means feel free to join the discussion, these are some great movies that really do need to be discussed more. :)

Here's the collection of all the reviews, and polls, posted so far in this Marathon,

The Lion King (1994)

Quote
I remember sitting in a crowded movie theater as a thirteen year old in June of 1994. This was an unusual theater experience for me, this was the first time I was seeing a Disney film by myself. I had yet to hit my ridiculous art phase that I spoke of in my long forgotten Halloween  review, but by the age of thirteen my once staunch Disney friends had grown up and left their movies behind. I remember asking any of my friends if they wanted to go, and the same friends who had been there with me on the first day to see Aladdin and The Beauty And The Beast laughed in my face. Disney was kiddie crap according to them, they had grown up and it was time for me to do so as well.

I forgot that you had started picking back up with it pix, I apologize for that. I think it would be easier if you went and posted your thoughts in this topic as you catch up, and then later when I format the first post I can include links to what you post in here as well. Sound cool?

Also, is there any way you can stickey this topic?

Pocahontas (1995)

Quote
As I look over the Disney animated canon I don’t think a more misunderstood and wrongly maligned movie exists beyond Pocahontas. I passed on many chances to see this film for a long time because of all the middling whispers I had heard. Turns out Disney has crafted a brilliant film in Pocahontas, one that has led me to break out my misunderstood card, a card I don’t like to ever break out. When you say a film is misunderstood it implies that in some way your take on the film is the correct one and that all others are wrong. I don’t want people to think that is what I am saying when I claim that Pocahontas  is a misunderstood film, but based on all I have heard about the movie and the reviews I have read I do feel the great majority missed the boat when it comes to Pocahontas.

I don't usually do this, but my opening paragraph does have some spoilers, if you care about that sort of thing.

The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1996)

Quote
Oh man, why did the mouse have to go for the politically correct ending? What The Hunchback Of Notre Dame needed was for Quasimodo to shove stupid ole Phoebus out of the way, grab Esmeralda by the arm and say, “Listen Chica, we’ve been singing this entire time about injustice and how we are all actually equal. Well, I saved your fine ass more times than I can count, so screw the blond buffoon, this is what you need to be getting on! Ya hear me?” Instead Quasimodo defers to the normal looking jock and it’s supposed to be a happy ending as he skulks to the side while the two pretty people make out. Pardon my French, but CINECAST! that noise! Ugh, that moment pisses me off to no end, even if it is somewhat in line with the dark life will CINECAST! you over tone of the entire film. Grow some brass ones Disney, you know and I know that you copped out with that ending and ruined what was otherwise shaping up to be one of your best efforts of all time. Do you hear me, of all TIME!!!

Same spoiler as above is included here:

I suppose that is a PC ending in the narrow sense that we'd be discomforted by her picking the deformed guy. But it is at least as brave to go with the realistic ending. The imperfect hero loses out on the girl to the alpha, no matter how heroic he has been. That is the bitter reality of the world and I think it is brave that Disney didn't pander to the happy ending.

Anyway, Hunchback is probably my favorite Disney.

I don't think Quasi getting the girl would have been a happy ending, either way you are left with a sort of unhappy ending where one of the two good guys loses out on the girl. Quasi getting the girl however would have showed some gumption on Disney's part, ad it really would have been a fitting cap to the theme of our differences not mattering.

I find it interesting in the review that you make no mention of the "Hellfire" sequence. It is one of the most beautiful and terrifying pieces of animation that I have seen. It is mixed with the perfect song that is sung by Tony Jay (the voice of the tomb). I love the film and easily put it in my top 5 Disney films, and that scene is a big reason why.

Oh, I loved that scene, loved everything about it, but there's only so much a man can talk about in a review, now isn't there?  :)
