My favorite Paul Muni performance.
Masterpiece (100-91) | Classic (90-80) | Entertaining (79-69) | Mediocre (68-58) | Cinemuck (57-21) | Crap (20-0)

New List for one of the greatest years for movies.

Random question: What's the first year in the sound era where international titles make up at least three of your top fifteen?

I think it's 1931
6.   Spanish Dracula
11.   Madchen in Uniform
15.   Le Million

Trying to find a better way to filter, but it looks like it gets more common starting in 1952.
Technically 1956...
3.   A Man Escaped
9.   The Red Balloon - why I say 'technically'
10.   Bob le flambeur

In 1958 I have...
1.   The Music Room (Jalsaghar)
4.   The Hidden Fortress
8.   Ivan the Terrible Part II
9.   Cairo Station
14.   Equinox Flower

And in 1959...
1.   The Human Condition
2.   The 400 Blows
9.   World of Apu

Ah interesting. Pretty much lines up with general notions about the end of the golden age of Hollywood, etc. Curious now to look at my own lists and see which years between 1930-1959 had my favorite film of the year being produced outside of Hollywood. (Were British films in scope for you?)

1931 might need an asterisk too. Spanish Dracula is a Hollywood film, really, right? Can’t remember what those supplements taught me.

I looked for Foreign Language and not country of origin, so I didn't consider British cinema.

It looked like the 1940s had a number of popular French films from filmmakers like Renoir, Cocteau, Marcel Carné, René Clair and Jean Vigo, but I usually undervalued these films as well as Italian Neorealism. It looked like the 1950s was when a wave of Japanese films from directors like Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi (who started decades earlier) and Naruse swept the world.
