This is difficult, how do you guys go about making the actual list? Do you just brainstorm? Use some kind of point system for good/great/masterpiece films?
What I did was I just came up with a giant list of directors, then I went through that big list one by one and picked 10 or 12 that I thought were definite inclusions. Those made up my top 10, then I went through and did the same thing four more times, each time trying to list the subgroup of 10 or so directors by how I rank them. So I picked 1-10, ranked them, picked 11-20, ranked them, picked 21-30, ranked them, etc. I didn't really do any sort of point system, or great-to-bad ratio. I just picked directors whose films I personally love. For instance, I had Spike Jonze at #16 and Akira Kurosawa at #27. That doesn't necessarily mean that Kurosawa is less skilled than Spike Jonze, but I just enjoy Jonze's films more.
