I have that Oshima set but haven't watched any of it (or any of his films).  Does anyone think any of them have a shot at my list?

One director you never hear mentioned here is Polish master Andrei Wajda.  His WWII films Ashes and Diamonds and Kanal are some of the best movies ever made.

Kanal is about the failed Warsaw uprising and tells the story of Polish freedom fighters trying to escape German encirclement through the sewers.  The dark, wet, airless sewers, are like the corridors of hell.  Soon fear, confusion, exhaustion, and madness take hold as the group desperately tries to reach daylight and freedom.

Ashes and Diamonds takes place right after Poland is liberated by Soviet armies, with the Russians sidestepping the Polish nationalists in favor of Moscow grown Polish communists.  The heroes that fought the Nazis are now once again hunted, this time by their alleged liberators.  The movie follows two Polish freedom fighters who spend a night at an inn on a mission to assassinate a Soviet agent.

Couldn't agree with you more. Ashes is in my top 20. Kanal was in the 80-90 range.

You should absolutely watch Wages of Fear keith.
I’ve lied to men who wear belts. I’ve lied to men who wear suspenders. But I’d never be so stupid as to lie to a man who wears both a belt and suspenders.

My favorite Schumacher.
One of my favorites from the 90's.
But not a Top 100 of all time.

Here's some food for thought. I am just back from London and this list of the top 100 noughties films comes from The Time Out London website. Some interesting choices and some extensive write-ups for the higher ranked films. Plus I CANNOT agree with their number one!

Oh yes and in the side bar there is an article labelling the Nolan / Kubrick comparison as Lazy and Facetious ;D

That list is bizarre in places.

I would never consider Joel Schumacher for anything that deserves praise. :P
