Korean Marathon
« on: October 19, 2006, 08:33:21 AM »
Over the last week or so here in the UK, film4 has been showing a Korean marathon and it struck me as a good idea for Adam and Sam.  Film4 showed some obvious choices, which our hosts, and most of us, have already seen (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance) but I thought it would be entertaining, and I know I'd love to expand on Korean films.

Films that could be considered

Brotherhood
Tale Of Two Sisters
Spring Summer Autumn Winter...And Spring
Memories Of Murder
A Bittersweet Life
J.S.A
Save The Green Planet

Many of which I haven't seen and would love an excuse to do so.

I think Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengence, and Chan-wook Park's contribution to Three...Extremes are the only Korean fims that I've seen.  I'm sure they can't all be as good as those, but they do make me want to see more.

Lady Vengence, J.S.A., and Memories of Murder are on my Netflix queue at the moment.  When I heard about Memories of Murder, I also heard a review of another film that sounded interesting:  The President's Last Bang.

On the other end of the spectrum is the North Korean film Pulgasari.  Has anybody seen it?  It seems to me that a film about the making of this film would be much better, but I would still kinda like to see it.  A couple of years ago, Duke University had a film festival of movies from "Axis of Evil" countries (plus Syria, I think), and they showed this one, but unfortunately I couldn't go.

Good Choices Wilson,
only got two to add:
- Attack the Gas Station!
- My Sassy Girl (before it gets remade with Elisha Cuthbert)

Chunhyang, directed by Im Kwon-taek is a very pretty period piece.

Musa, The Warrior is an entertaining action movie that stars Zhang Ziyi.

Any thoughts on Samaria? I like it better than Spring, Summer...

Absolutely, positively, definitely cannot leave off Die Bad, possibly my favorite Korean film so far.  Talk about heartbreaking, important pictures!
ack off, man.  I'm a scientist.
