1980s US Bracket: Resurrections (Round 1)
« on: August 27, 2010, 03:07:48 PM »
There are fourteen spots to fill in order to close out round one of the bracket and begin round two. For expediency's sake, we'll probably handle them simultaneously ... even though that puts the eventual losing films in the eight pending round one matchups at a disadvantage (since they aren't yet eligible for resurrection). Then again, they can always be swapped in after round two, I think, so maybe it doesn't matter. I'm open to argument.

Anyway, here's how the fourteen resurrections will play out. The order is determined by verdict completion time (the average for round one being about 40 days, depending on when exactly the last five [or nine] verdicts come in).

14. Consensus Pick  — The Empire Strikes Back
13. Consensus Pick — Amadeus
12. Consensus Pick — Ghostbusters
11. Consensus Pick — The Times of Harvey Milk
10. Consensus Pick — Who Frames Roger Rabbit?
9. Consensus Pick — Clue
8. Consensus Pick — Manhunter
7. smirnoff — 3rd Most Verdicts (12) — 23.3 Days (avg) — Altered States
6. ses593 — Random Resurrection (Blue Velvet vs. Melvin and Howard) — 14 Days — Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
5. michael x — Random Resurrection (Back to the Future vs. Lightning Over Braddock) — 6 Days — Stop Making Sense
4. Bondo — 2nd Most Verdicts (13) — 4.4 Days (avg) — Three Amigos
3. THATguy — Random Resurrection (Four Friends   vs. Dressed to Kill) — 2 Days — A Christmas Story
2. GothamCity151 — Random Resurrection (The Big Red One vs. Vernon, Florida) — 1 Day — The King of Comedy
1. GothamCity151 — Most Verdicts (27) — 0.6 Days (avg) — A Fish Called Wanda

Here are the films that were voted into the bracket initially. The films in red lost in round one and are eligible for resurrection. The films in green still have their round one matchups pending.

I think I'd love how awkward it'd be, or how awkward it should be.

Oh yeah, so post your lists here. Top ten should do it. You're choosing from the titles in red from the first list and all the titles from the second list (plus films not yet mentioned at all). I'll try to add those not-yet-mentioned titles to the second list as they come in.

I'm in favor of voting for films sight-unseen, by the way. I mean, doesn't matt tomorrow make Model sound great?

edit: Oh, and I haven't yet decided exactly what system to use for this consensus voting. We're just in the nominations stage right now, though, so it's all good. Try to get your lists up this week, 'kay?

So the random resurrection simply lets the person who did the pair pick something, it doesn't automatically resurrect the loser in that pair? Good to know...better that way probably.

Anyway, my top 10 resurrections/additions:
1. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
2. Three Amigos
3. The Times of Harvey Milk
4. Spaceballs
5. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
6. Tootsie
7. Amadeus
8. Clue
9. Willow
10. Sophie's Choice (because I haven't seen it)

1. The Times of Harvey Milk
2. Drugstore Cowboy

I'll complete the rest later.
I actually consider a lot of movies to be life-changing! I take them to my heart and they melt into my personality.

Looking over it I think what is happening is there should be 9 films that aren't paired up (279 films on the original list but only 135 pairs (270 films)...the extra film in each bracket gets paired with a resurrection. So we need to identify those nine that are in the original list but not paired because they are already in and Aliens is one of them.

I need to finish my round one matchup before my vote here counts, but something like:

1. Streetwise
2. The Times of Harvey Milk
3. The Thin Blue Line
4. Glory
5. The Empire Strikes Back
6. The Big Chill
7. Clue
8. Model
9. F/X
10. Stop Making Sense

I might swap in some of these (among others), if they start showing up on other lists:

Colors
Highlander
Manhunter
Parenthood
Stand and Deliver
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Tucker: The Man and His Dream
