I have now seen 13 by Bunuel. This is over the span of about 20 years, and I feel like I watched them in the wrong order to get any proper insight into his filmmaking. There appears to be a bunch that are bizarre, surreal comedies and another group that are more normal with the occasionally surreal flourish. I notice Bunuel likes to use frustration as a theme. Sophisticated people being denied basic pleasures due to unexpected trickery and unexpected intrusions. The interrupted attempts at eating in The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie is a more out there variation of Fernando Ray being denied sex in both Tristana and That Obscure Object of Desire.

I can see a lot in what Bunuel is presenting to think about and discuss. Unfortunately, my film school upbringing only covered Un chien andalou. The bulk of his work occupy a middle ground of indifference. They don't leave me wanting to get into a conversation. I don't have the passion to take a stance against Bunuel's large fan base, like I do with Goddard and I wouldn't say I get the acclaim either. His body of work is the opposite of compulsively watchable.

L'Age d'Or (rewatch) - I had an hour to kill, and this is one of those in my collection that I haven't watched in over 5 years, so I threw it in the player.  This is my fourth time watching it, and I think I'm done with it.  I still like it, but it's not getting better on revisits and the fact that I kind of had to push myself into watching it again is a bad sign.  It's one of those movies where I feel like I should enjoy it more than I actually do.  There are some good bits, but most of them are in the second half.  That first half hour is sort of blah, without as many of the kinky subversions or jarring juxtapositions that are the highlights of Buñuel's brief pre-Mexico career.  An "important" film, perhaps, but like a lot of surrealist work, it's thrilling at first but then you're ready to move on.  Rating: Good (77)

Have seen only Un Chien Andalou. But it's pretty great.
