Old and New (1929)
★ ★ ★ – Good
As much as I love a good story and tight script, that doesn't apply when it comes to Eisenstein. I didn't catch how all of the events connect, but the compositions are top notch and there are dense layers of meaning along with the general contrast of old ways of farming vs. modernization. The film is a rush of brain stimulation, and even playful at times. (I read afterwards that the creamer spraying out of the long tubes wasn't just my dirty mind at work, and I can't appreciate enough that during the sequence involving hogs being slaughtered, Eisenstein cuts to a cute ceramic pig figurine.) Further proof that the filmmaker was a true artist and a pretty genius one at that.
