Salon.com has a very nice piece on his career.

Great line...

12 Angry Men Sidney Lumet, 1957

Probably one of the most shameful ones I haven't seen. One of the great liberal classics. One of the foundational texts! Okay. The titular angry men are stuck in a single room throughout the majority of the film. It's the hottest day of the summer (just like Do the Right Thing, a much more florid take on something like this - bunch of different viewpoints and people get their chance to speak and say their piece and we decide what's correct) and these guys are all stuck in a single room together. It's a murder trial and it seems like an open and shut case, but Fonda's got something to say by golly. So then begins the proceedings. Fonda has the rest of the film to instill some doubt into the other jurors and make sure that this kid is given a chance. It plays out more or less the way you think it will. Lumet does his best to make things lively and interesting thru his staging and blocking and stuff and it mostly works; it's still play-like, but if it's a good play what does it matter. Since you know more or less the way the film will play out, it kinda makes it rote and boring; the film's most overt, obvious moment is when all the jurors turn their back on the racist ramblings of one of the men. It's a good film, a nice film, so I can see how everyone has agreed that it's a classic, but I dunno it's just not something to get too excited about.

Yeah, that's about how I feel.  It's fine.  Nothing to really complain about, but nothing to get all excited about either.

12 Angry Men
Network
Fail-Safe
Dog Day Afternoon
The Verdict

Serpico
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

Family Business
Murder on the Orient Express

Fail-Safe and Network were very close for the second spot. The former is a hidden and overlooked gem in a career filled with them... except for the last two on my list. From what I've seen he's at his strongest when taking on social and/or political topics more head on as opposed the more character or familial oriented stuff.
