8. He Walked By Night

I would have included this but I didn't know how much was directed by Mann and how much by Werker.

Yeah, it's hard to say.  It feels exactly like an Anthony Mann film from that period though.

The Man From Laramie Anthony Mann, 1955

The last of the Mann/Stewart westerns. Another tale of a man who's quite seemingly about to get CINECAST!ed up and crazy. Stewart comes from Laramie aiming to find out who's responsible for some such thing or other. He doesn't get a happy reception. In a nightmarish sequence, his horses are killed and his rides are burnt. Crazy stuff. But now he aims to stay in this little town that clearly doesn't want him. Everyone wants him gone. But Stewart doesn't bend, which reminded me of several anime heroes of yore. More good times. There are secrets, of course, and sons who are stupid and ignorant. Stewart isn't as dark and scary as he is in the other westerns. Just a man full of irascible feelings. All the passions and psychological states of the characters are in the landscape, you just gotta see them. Pretty good movie, no?

My 2nd favorite of the Mann/Stewart films. You say Stewart's not as dark and scary, but aside from when he threatens to break the guys arm in Winchester 73, the darkest/scariest moment in the series is the 15 minutes after his horses are killed. The shot of him walking purposefully towards the perpetrator (and the camera) determined to get revenge, that's the only time Stewart ever scared me on camera.
