Too true!!

I have that and I Wish still to get to, but to buy me some time (cause I'm gonna need it!), here's my thoughts on another of his films...

Quote
Still Walking
I don’t think this pedestrian bridge with the rusty streaks is unintentional. Still functioning, yet slowly it corrodes from exposure. Ignoring the decay makes the growing blight imperceptible to regulars, but for someone new on the scene, it’s jarring.

A family, who is in the same predicament, can galvanize by gathering and ritual, but unless the under layers are exposed and scraped away, the deterioration continues as affection is withheld, words are suppressed, and seemingly innocent potshots are taken. The rot is compounded when mixed with the mother’s salty bitter tears, she extracts the price of a life for a life from a boy who was at the wrong place at the wrong time, therefore inadvertently taking a beloved son away from her. Her intentional destruction shows the extent of the hidden damage. There is hope though in the visiting next generations’ ability to repair, as they observe with the perspective of time and distance.

Nobody Knows

Saw this ten or so years ago and still think about it often. Devastating.

Our Little Sister  (Koreeda Hirokazu, 2015)

A pleasant mix of Nobody Knows and Still Walking — but maybe too pleasant and likely too familiar. Half the scenes feel like epilogues, and when the real epilogue arrives, I feel cheated by its lack of distinction. I would have liked to have spent more time at the soccer field, where the film is at its most joyous.

Grade: B-
