1. Children of Paradise
2. Le jour se leve

The first is one of the best big movies ever.  The second is a solid proto-noir.

Madness!

I think I'd love how awkward it'd be, or how awkward it should be.

he's like Welles for me, a legendary autuer with a film with a film infinitely better than his other great films, in Carne's instance, Children of Paradise, my #3 fav film ever.

Children of Paradise (Marcel Carne, 1945)

A big ole classic, stuffed to the gills with incident, humor, pathos - this has it all. Telling the story of Garance, and the four men who are either in love with her or want to possess her (or both), Carne manages to bring an entire world to life. The backstage rhythms are all fully realized and vibrant and the interplay between the dramas on stage and the ones off of it are, frankly, damn brilliant. And, hell, the whole thing's full of showstopping little numbers and vignettes: when Baptiste saves Garance with a "moi!" done with a POV shot, Frederique's anarchic stage performance, a surprising meeting between old lovers, the carnival. Melancholy and joyful, the whole thing's an ode to the folly of passionate love, how beautiful and how tragic it can be.
