Terrific noir director.  Haven't seen Ben since I was a kid, maybe it's better than I recall.

Interesting. Don't think I've seen any.

Does this mean a William Witney poll is in the works?

Upcoming on TCM:

October 26: The Young Doctors
January 14: 99 River Street
January 14: Kansas City Confidential

Will definitely try to catch those last two.

You pulled a name I've never heard of!  I had to look him up, never seen anything by him.

Kansas City Confidential  (Phil Karlson, 1952)
Mildly entertaining story of ex-con John Payne trying to clear his name after he's the accidental patsy of an armored car robbery. The narrative is pretty rough. Everything hinges on the fact that Payne is an unusually timely and consistent deliveryman for a florist; and the third act gets all muddied because the robbers' plan to split the money doesn't make any sense (and a key element — wearing masks to maintain anonymity — is all but forgotten). The main draw here is seeing Payne as a really strong noir lead. I really only know him from Miracle on 34th Street, so his tough guy performance here was something of a revelation. And George Diskant (They Live by Night) films Payne and others in close-up really well, giving everything a nice, pulpy punch. I wish the film's long shots were half as interesting. Jack Elam and Lee Van Cleef are a lot of fun, too.
Grade: B-
