I remember liking but not loving it, but your review and screenshots kind of make me want to see it again.

Is it Moby Dick they're discussing in the classroom scene?

Yeah, Moby Dick and the horrors and bravery of whaling and Melville's dark days and cynicism in the American dream (counter to Emerson and Thoreuax). It's a good little lecture, tying into the overall film almost too neatly — something that would annoy me in a fiction films but awes me in a documentary. The teacher even draws comparison to Death of a Salesman, saying that Miller often gets credit for creating the first working class tragic hero, but it was really Melville with Ahab, a fisherman from Nantucket.

I'm familiar with this. There should be a word for it.

EX LIBRIS - The New York Public Library
As someone who always has the max number of books and CDs checked out (bunch of DVDs, Blus often) and spends maybe at least 2 hours weekly in libraries looking through sh*t, attending workshops/lectures, etc., this was just all kinds of amazing.  F*ck yes.

It's killing me that I haven't been able to see that yet. Thank god for local news exposes about public libraries as drug dens and sex clubs. Tiding me over.

As usual, Wiseman films are hard to access. I know sometimes they come on PBS but who watches TV these days?

It's insane to me that Wiseman is so cagey about his own work. I haven't seen a single film of his. I live in LA, but I don't think there's a single retrospective on him. He won't release his works on streaming. I can't get them from the library. The only way is to buy a DVD of a single work for $30+.
