I've seen only Bull Durham - it was ok, I think. Don't remember it too well.

Skip the apologia for an unrepentant racist and rewatch Tin Cup instead.

Cobb (1994)
★ ★ ★ - Okay
I normally hate films about people who were great achievers but terrible human beings, but Cobb (the film and the person) doesn't completely embrace their darkness. Most importantly, they don't believe one excuses the other. There's a great scene at a tribute banquet where a highlight film plays and in Cobb's mind there's a transition to all the horrible deeds he's done. He loves to brag about his baseball stats, but no matter how much he turns up the volume - which is quite loud - the demons still shout at him louder. We get backstory to Cobb's terrible upbringing, but it's never used to excuse the evil Cobb can't help bubble up. It barely explains it.

I was about to write there's no subtlety here to explain Shelton's decision to play the film like it's about to drive off a cliff, a metaphor that happens literally in the film. However, underneath Tommy Lee Jones' bullish performance we do get the two sides to Cobb, and it's interesting to watch a film so reckless. Interesting and exhausting. Two hours of Ty Cobb bellowing is more than enough, and Robert Wuhl doesn't have the skill to help us appreciate the brief quiet moments.

I was thinking that Tommy Lee Jones must have been so young (he was 18 in 1964) to play Cobb, then I found out the film was released in 1994 not 1964.

Ty Cobb was an enigma. Horrible, racist asshole on and off the field. But, when the discussion as to who was the greatest hitter of all time was, there is no doubt. It's not Ted Williams or Babe Ruth, it's Cobb. In 1925, when he was in the twilight of his career and Babe Ruth was destroying all homerun records, a reporter asked Cobb why he didn't try to adjust his swing and hit homeruns like the Sultan of Swat. It's what was bringing more fans out to the games, but Cobb played the game scientifically. He told the reporter that, but just to show everyone that he could if he wanted to, against the St. Louis Browns he put on a show that even the Bambino never accomplished. In two games he went 9 - 12 with 5 homeruns, a double and three singles, amassing 11 RBIs and 25 Total Bases. All 9 hits were consecutive too.

I'm a Red Sox fan and I love Babe Ruth, but Cobb was the greatest hitter of all time...PERIOD!
