I think they are a little too mainstream for the academy, could be wrong though.
With 10 nominees, it really opens things up, you'll recall that District 9 and The Blind Side were nominated last year. Also, with its box office and acclaim, and considering that Up got in last year, it seems to me that Toy Story 3 is a lock.

I dunno if Z is talkin about the same thing as me, but I was actually talkin about which movies have the best chance to win. Just ta clarify.

I agree, TS3 is definitely a lock.
I actually consider a lot of movies to be life-changing! I take them to my heart and they melt into my personality.

The Runaways

I think you have been misinformed on audience and critical reception for these two.

If Black Swan does reasonably well at boxoffice, it has a good chance.  True Grit and 127 Hours are out because Coens and Boyle are recent winners.  Toy Story 3 is out because it is animated.  Portman better win best actress, the academy owes Aronofsky for robbing his films of acting oscars for Requiem and Wrestler.  Kids are Alright should not be discounted, never bet against a gay movie in an Oscar race.

By that logic The Social Network and Inception have just as much a chance as Black Swan, if not more.

Juss sayin'.

I think they are a little too mainstream for the academy, could be wrong though.

You are. The Academy doesn't always looks for big hits, but they also don't usually care for "weird" films. Black Swan is a weird movie. It will get nominated, but its chances for winning are much smaller than movies like 127 Hours and The Social Network. Plus, the Academy doesn't mind more mainstream films when they are really big AND really beloved. Ask Titanic and Return of the King and Gladiator. True Grit has no chance to win because it just doesn't look like a Best Picture winning kind of movie, but the Coens will likely get it nominated. 127 Hours might win because it is daring in terms of style and that one climactic scene, but it isn't some "weird" movie, and it has a simple life-affirming tone and message that even the older members of the Academy can get behind. It's actually the rare case where the good will toward Danny Boyle might align with the quality of the film itself to provide him with two wins.

But this is why I say that the field is quite open among the likely nominees. They are have serious pros and cons against them, which might create the environment for a Toy Story 3 surprise.
