Sturges does insubstantial witty banter, QT builds his banter into substance.

:D It's awesome that people think that.

The fact that people do think that hurts me, well more makes me wonder about our future as a species, but same thing.

Well, I know you like QT, and I've been of the mind for a while that QT writes dialogue that he wishes was anywhere near as smart as Sturges', if that does anything for you. I'd say to give The Palm Beach Story a go, it's one of his greats, it's super on the dialogue and it's short, so if you don't like it then it won't take up too much of your time.

I'm still very hesitant but If I do get around to Sturges I'll make sure and consider it. Thanks

@ smirnoff: You asked if we thought you would like Morvern Callar. I have to say no, I honestly don't think you would. It's more meandering, contemplative and mood-oriented than the films you usually go for.
Thanks Em. That's exactly what I wanted to know.

@Smirnoff: Having seen two of Sturges films I'd say skip it. Sturges does insubstantial witty banter, QT builds his banter into substance.

Also, I'd pass on Morvern, though would recommend Ratcatcher if you haven't seen that and are keen to check out a Ramsey film.

The World is the one Jia I've seen that didn't frustrate me.

I think I need to buy a copy of the Bondo film guide, since I find we're usually on the same wavelength. Thanks for your thoughts.

Sturges is on the back burner, for now. (It's really just a priority thing, not a ruling out).
Double confirmation on skipping Movern (for now). Done. I'll queue up Ratcatcher (because I am curious and want on the Ramsay-wagon before it's full). ;)
That The World was the most positive experience with Jia you had, and I was already inclined to give it a shot, well, that's promising.

I've done polls for all the missing directors now and updated the list.

* Picks from my top 30 that didn't make it:

#11 Bela Tarr

If you had put him at #10 instead of #11 he would have made it! So close.......

Next Year!!! ;)

In the mean time I will spend the next 17 week watching Satantango  ;D

I quit reading after Clint Eastwood.  :-\

I smiled to see that neither Mystic River nor Million Dollar Baby appeared on his selected filmography.

chesterfilms needs to update a lot of his polls.  Also, some of these could use polls that are structured like the other "Director's Best" threads.  I might throw those together later, but what we have now should suffice.

If you notice a thread that needs updating, you can just post in it to that effect and I'll get around to it eventually. Unless another one of those mod types beats me to it.

Those new entry directors are fantastic!

Indeed. I've moved The Bucket List, Jersey Girl, K-19: The Widowmaker, and She's Having a Baby to the top of my queue. I'm sure at least one of them is better than Jack.

edit: D'oh, that wasn't meant to sound quite so snarky. Anyway, I'm totally happy to see Fritz Lang and the Maysles on there. Has anybody compiled the list yet of the directors that fell off the list?
